Not X-rated...
It was dark by the time I rounded the curve that brought our home into view... and there it stood... golden lights spilling out the windows like a Thomas Kincaid painting... covering the ground in shimmering, dancing pools of warmth. As I rode past the house, Snuffalupagus and The Little One chased the curve of the fence the whole length of the front yard, around the corner, and to the gate to meet me with the over-the-top joy that only dogs display... tails wagging furiously... barking, whimpering, shaking from the tips of their noses to the ends of their tails in paroxysms of delight... while Tiger Kitty lazily jumped down from his perch atop Miracle's truck to slowly saunter to his side of the gate. Such is my escape from the concrete jungle each day into a realm of belonging each night.
I stepped onto the front porch and immediately noticed something missing...
We did have a lovely old cedar dresser out on the front porch... for lack of room inside. It was hand-made by prisoners in a Georgia penitentiary some fifty or more years ago... you know the kind... a ladies dresser with a big round mirror... deep narrow drawers on either side... the center lower, with narrow drawers... the kind your grandmother... or great-grandmother... sat in front of each night in her cotton nightgown... brushing her hair the obligatory one hundred strokes...
The dresser was gone...
I opened the front door then to find a wonderland... house spotlessly clean... lights dim... candles glowing from every flat surface... hence the shimmering, dancing pools of light spilling out the windows. The table was set with china and tall red candles, centered with a single red rose and a heart-shaped box of chocolate. Miracle stood in front of the stove, preparing supper for his Valentine... (me, me, me...) baked potatoes... asparagus... steak... crab... and what was that... ahhhhh... yes.... Mozart pouring forth from speakers all over the house....
He gave me the most scrumptuous kiss... and led me to the bedroom...
LOL... no... no... no... it's safe to keep reading....
There in our room, where my sister's dresser once stood, was the old cedar dresser... all oiled and polished... the beauty of the wood looking soft and rich... and right next to it stood a wonderful old wardrobe that looked as if it had been cut from the same tree... tied with a big red ribbon... it took my breath away...
It was amazing... and I had to ask how in the world he found a piece that matched the dresser made by those long-ago and probably-dead-by-now prisoners... and he surprised me by telling me that it was part of the original set... made by the same men... that he'd gone back to the friends who he'd originally gotten the dresser from and asked if he could buy the wardrobe for his Valentine... and they said yes... and so... there it was... what a wonderful, sweet gift from Miracle... and a thoughtful, sweet thing for his friends to part with the wardrobe...
What? Oh, yes... I got something for Miracle, too... tickets to the Nascar race at the Atlanta Speedway next month... with a couple of our friends... which... by the way... means that Valentine's Day will last over a month at our house... whooooooo hoooooooooooo....
Our first Valentine's Day was really, really cool...
